History

In 1984, Rick Long left the practice of law for the world of marketing and communication. The first step in this journey was joining a small Tulsa-based publishing company—working initially on a single monthly newsletter providing business advice to a specific retail niche.

Five years later—in 1989—Rick and his employer founded Source Publications with a goal of providing communication services to a much broader range of industries, niches and clients. While Rick ultimately bought out his partner’s interest in Source, the two remain steadfast friends and continue to work on various projects together (including the original publication that Rick began editing way back in 1984).

From those humble beginnings, SOURCEmpi (as we are now known) has matured into a diversified custom communications firm, with expertise in three crucial areas:

Marketing...Publications…Interactive.

::Tiger, Phil and the Other Guy

I'm not a golfer. Never really was very good at the game. And since I'm only playing, oh, once every year or two these days, I never will be. Nevertheless, I do watch a bit of golf on television--particularly the major tournaments. And yesterday's Masters was one for the ages. The commentators sensed it--breathlessly tracking the head-to-head match-up of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, the two greatest players of their generation. Mickelson took charge early, with a tournament record-tying front nine. Tiger gradually closed the gap on the back, finishing only a single stroke behind by the time the two champions rolled in their final putts on 18.

But the funny thing was this: for the entire round, neither of these two golfers was in the lead. Even as they fought their personal  duel, someone else was ahead. For the four hours Tiger and Phil were battling each other, Angel Cabrera--the golfer who ultimately won the tournament--was quietly, steadily, relentlessly going about his business several holes behind them.  How easy it would have been for Cabrera to listen to the roar of the Tiger/Phil gallery, to forget the mission at hand, to lose his focus. But Cabrera would have none of that. He kept at it, steadily attacking the course, making his way into a three-way playoff and closing out the victory two holes later with a solid par. And for his efforts, he's now the Masters champion.

OK, that's enough golf. But the lesson--for business and for life--is clear. Other, flashier "players" may be out there. They may attract the crowds. They may be waging their own war. But our mission is always to stay focused, to do our job, to do our best. And when we do, good things will happen. Keeping that focus isn't always easy--but it is always right.

So, the next time you hear the roar of a gallery up in front, keep your head down and hit your shot. Your best shot. You'll be just fine.
